CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NJ – The Cape May County Board of County Commissioners proudly announces the completion of Phase 1 of the Gerald M. Thornton Veterans’ Cemetery Enhanced Beautification Project. To commemorate the completion of this project, a Ribbon Cutting ceremony is scheduled for June 27, 2024, at noon. The event will take place at the Veterans’ Cemetery, located at 129 Crest Haven Road in Cape May Court House. Members of the public are cordially invited to attend.
Commissioner Director Leonard C. Desiderio announced the completion of Phase 1, stating, “The Ribbon Cutting not only highlights the remarkable enhancements made to the Veterans cemetery but also serves as a tribute to our brave Veterans who selflessly defended our freedom. Supporting our Veterans, our local heroes, and their families is an honor we cherish. The cemetery’s transformation emphasizes their significance within the Cape May County Community.”
The multi-year Veterans’ Cemetery enhancement project focuses on both aesthetics and accessibility. Phase 1 improvements include a new entryway, enhanced landscaping, and new walkways to ensure safe navigation and accessibility throughout the grounds.
Commissioner Bobby Barr, liaison to Veterans Services, shared his pride in the project’s impact: “Preserving and improving the Veterans’ Cemetery as a place of honor for our servicemen and women, as well as our citizens, remains our priority. The cemetery is a place where families can come to visit and reflect on the lives of their loved ones. We eagerly anticipate the next phase of this important program.”
