Annual $5,000 Award to Cape May County High School Seniors Committed to Public Service

Fields of Study: Political Science, Government, Law, or Public Policy

Scholarship Mission

In honor of former Middle Township Mayor Daniel Lockwood’s twenty-five years of public service to the greater Cape May County community and his distinguished tenure in elected municipal office, this scholarship encourages and supports high school seniors pursuing higher education in public service-related fields.

This award is funded annually through private donations and administered by the Daniel Lockwood Memorial Scholarship Committee and administered by the Cape May County Education Foundation.

Eligible areas of study include political science, government, law, public policy, or closely related disciplines. The scholarship seeks to recognize individuals who demonstrate:

  • Leadership and civic engagement 
  • Strong personal convictions balanced with openness to differing perspectives 
  • Versatility and adaptability 
  • A commitment to patriotism and American civic values 

Eligibility Requirements (Must meet all criteria)

  • Current high school senior graduating in 2026
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident residing in Cape May County
  • Accepted to or planning to enroll full-time in an accredited 2- or 4-year college/university 
  • Demonstrated interest in a public service-related field (political science, government, law, public policy, or similar) 
  • Proven leadership and civic/patriotic engagement

  • Leadership Experience – 30% 
  • Essay Quality & Alignment – 30% 
  • Academic Record – 20% 
  • Letters of Recommendation – 10% 
  • Civic/Patriotic Activities – 10%

Section 4: Civic Engagement & Patriotism

Describe activities that demonstrate patriotism or commitment to American civic values. Examples include:

  • Community service or volunteer work 
  • Faith-based or civic organization involvement

  • Political campaigns or civic programs (e.g., Boys State/Girls State) 
  • Eagle Scout or Girl Scout Gold Award projects

Section 6: Required Essay

Essay must be:

  • 600–800 words 
  • Typed, double-spaced, 12-point font 
  • Include your name and essay title on each page 

Essay Topic

Describe your commitment to public service and your long-term career goals. Provide specific examples of how you have demonstrated patriotism, leadership, and civic engagement. How will your education help you serve your community and country?
