Ocean City
Known as “America’s Greatest Family Resort,” Ocean City, the northernmost seashore resort in Cape May County, offers something for every member of the family. This dry town (meaning no alcohol served within city limits) is perfectly complimented by clean, well-protected beaches, a thriving boardwalk, beautiful back bays, a diversified downtown shopping district, and a long list of special events. An Ocean City vacation is sure to be complete with sun, fun and long lasting memories for family members of all ages.
As quirky as it is traditional, Ocean City continues to promote special events that attract families to the resort and keep them coming back. A renowned summertime event is Night in Venice, one of the largest boat parades to be found. Boaters and waterfront homeowners decorate their properties for a huge, fun-filled festival on the city’s bayside. Other traditional favorites are the Baby Parade, Farmers Market, Flower Show and Car Shows, and their famous spring and autumn block parties.

Ocean City’s true personality shines through its more offbeat events, like the popular Doo Dah Parade, which kicks off the season of unusual events every year on the Saturday following America’s Tax deadline, April 15th. Creatively clad basset hounds and eccentric celebrity grand marshals help make the Doo Dah Parade an annual affair that continues to draw locals and visitors alike.
Don’t forget Martin Z. Mollusk Day, Ocean City’s own version of Ground Hog Day. Held in early May on the beach, hermit crab Martin Z. Mollusk is urged to come out of his shell so it can be determined if he sees his shadow, thereby predicting a long and sunny summer! Other unforgettably unique events include a Freckles contest, Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant, and French Fry sculpture.
The end of the year is celebrated by revelers of all ages at First Night Ocean City on December 31st. It’s an entertaining event for family and friends of all ages, and also supports various local charities.

Of course, visitors and locals alike are drawn to the island’s eight miles of gloriously clean beaches and its accompanying three-mile long boardwalk – complete with amusements, a water park, miniature golf arcades, and plenty of delicious treats. Various retail stores, including art galleries, gift shops, clothing boutiques and more make the boardwalk a shopper’s delight. The landmark Ocean City Music Pier hosts a variety of musical acts, from classical to big band, rock and roll to reggae. No matter what you’re looking for, this boardwalk offers a family-friendly atmosphere for all to enjoy.
Ocean City also offers spiritual entertainment events through Ocean City Tabernacle, an interdenominational Christian ministry that hosts nationally known speakers, fine music, and a worship setting. This welcoming summer community especially encourages vacationers to “come as you are.”
A Jersey Cape gem would not be complete without recreational and cultural facilities. In Ocean City, you can find the Aquatic and Fitness Center, Bayside Center, a skateboard park and fully equipped playgrounds. Also the Ocean City Arts Center, Public Library and Historical Museum are popular visits.

Ocean City’s downtown district, located along Asbury Avenue from 6th through 12th streets, is comprised of over 100 magnificent shops and eateries. On the “Avenue,” shop for the latest trends in clothing, antiques, art, shoes, gifts, beach items, hardware and more! Take time to stop in a quaint café, fine restaurant, traditional diner or ice cream shop to sample a taste of the island. Additionally, the Ocean City boardwalk is one of the few that offers year-round retail shopping that features upscale gifts, house wares and clothing making Ocean City shopping destination for locals and visitors alike.
When visiting the Jersey Cape, make sure to carve out ample time to enjoy the wonderful attractions that Ocean City offers. It’s the perfect place for fun family times that will evolve into precious lifetime memories.
