STONE HARBOR, at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach, is home to a bird sanctuary, and a quaint downtown area with trendy boutiques, art galleries and fabulous restaurants, all complemented with beautiful beaches and gorgeous homes. With the world renowned Wetlands Institute close by, Stone Harbor is a nature lovers paradise.
Bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by bay waters, the town is a natural for ecology-related travel and its calm back bay waters are ideal for swimming, boating, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, surfing and other water sports. Wide streets and flat terrain create the perfect avenue for biking, in-line skating, walking or jogging. The island is dotted with playgrounds and offers activities from shuffleboard to tennis, volleyball to soccer and everything in between. Annual events include festivals, arts and crafts shows, parades, holiday celebrations and more.
The resort enjoys a history touched by legend and folk lore. It was probably named for the captain of whaling ship that was seeking a safe port after navigating Hereford Inlet in a storm long after the Lenni Lenape Indians left their mark on the island.
Virgin land between 111th Street and 117th Street attracted a variety of shore birds and soon ornithological groups were visiting to view the egrets and herons. In 1941, the Stone Harbor Bird Club was organized and within a few years the area was designated as a wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary contains 21 acres and has been recognized as the only heronry in the United States within the boundary of a municipality and is registered as a National Landmark by the National Park Service. Commonly spotted species include the American egret, snowy egret, Louisiana heron, green heron, yellow crowned and black crowned night egrets, cattle egrets, and glossy ibis.
The laid-back attitude of this slow-paced beach town is perfect for quiet romantic getaways, quality family time or back-to-nature retreats.
Accommodations include guest houses, condos and rental properties and inns, most within walking distance of the beach, downtown area, restaurants and other amenities.
