WHETHER its a full day of fishing for flounder, night-fishing in search of blues or a multi-day excursion to reel in a giant marlin, the Jersey Cape offers an abundance of well-equipped marinas to make sure theres plenty to brag about at the end of the trip.
Crabbing and clamming are other favorite seashore pastimes, with hundreds of perfect spots to cast your line or trap.
For the sport fisherman, the annual Mid-Atlantic $500,000 tournament
attracts people from around the country as they compete for the largest billfish and hefty prize money. There are also many smaller tournaments throughout the year.
Boat and marina proprietors offer seafaring opportunities for those who want to relax and enjoy the sea, sky and salt air with plenty of sightseeing cruises, dinner cruises and party boat rentals available. Some boats take passengers on a coastal tour of barrier islands; some explore the back bays and wetlands in search of rare waterfowl. Still others offer sailing on the wide-open ocean, pampering passengers with wine and cheese on leisurely afternoon or evening sailing adventures.
Whale watching, enhanced through the use of sophisticated electronic tracking systems, is a great family outing. No boat captain can guarantee a sighting, but glimpses of these giant mammals are common in the waters of this region. Whale-watching expeditions depart each day throughout the summer and into the fall from docks around the county. Bottle-nosed dolphins are often sighted frolicking in the bay and ocean. These dwell in only the cleanest waters, and are testimony to the success of New Jerseys coastal water monitoring program
